In the feature “Fathers & Daughters,” the storyline focuses on the love between a father and his daughter. This was a very passionate project for me, one that touched my soul. Having a daughter of my own, I knew this film would pull at my heart. Director Gabriele Muccino’s interpretation of the script combined with his unique talent of working with young actors took this film to a much higher level. The intimate narrative between Jake (Russell Crowe) and Katie (Kylie Rogers, the young Katie and Amanda Seyfried, the older Katie), a father and daughter, was superbly acted.
Jake is an award winning writer who ends up having health problems while his daughter is young. He’s forced to leave his daughter to go into therapy and work on getting better. Eventually, he passes away leaving a void in his daughter’s life, a void that is filled with sex and alcohol. We see glimpses of her inner “good” which eventually come to life.
In this specific scene, which I shared during our last “Shane’s Inner Circle” Movie Matinee, I break down a long sequence between Jake and a young Katie. We walk from Jake’s desk in his home office and we capture Katie wanting attention from him as he is writing. We then track back on the Freefly MōVI M15 to keep one solid motion as we go into Katie’s bedroom and find her hiding under her bed. I walk through the lighting setup and what it took to accomplish this shot. Take a look:
