When I traveled around the United States on the Illumination Experience tour last fall it was eye opening for me. Not only did the attendees show passion and enthusiasm, but offered amazing suggestions for other aspects that they wanted to learn about. Across all 26 states and Canada the number one request was how to light day exteriors. What was my thought process behind it? How did I balance, shade, bounce, color, reflect, etc?
You ask and I shall deliver!
The Day Exterior Playbook
I created this Day Exterior Playbook to demystify the art of using natural and artificial light in day environments. Topics include: Extending dawn, creating longer sunsets, using natural bounce light, necessary tools required, finding locations that light themselves, location scouting and what to look for, planning your shoot around the path of the sun, using reflector and mirror boards to re-direct the sun, using light and color meters to help balance sunlight and shadow, matching artificial light with natural sunlight, how to shape daylight with the use of negative fill, and the secret sauce and techniques to filter and transform your day exterior work.
This style of curriculum is equivalent to taking a master class in cinematography. I reveal my playbook that has taken me over 25 years to perfect. Using my proven methodology, this interactive and fun style of learning gives you the necessary tools to increase your speed, expand your skillset and help gain confidence while shooting outside.
The playbook includes eleven articles, seven instructional videos, fourteen different film clips for illustration, and multiple lighting schematics and explanatory photographs.
