Need for Speed

It was my pleasure to be a recent guest on the Go Creative Show with Ben Consoli. Ben is the owner of BC Media Productions, and the show is dedicated to creative professionals in the video production, film, television and music industries, listened to in over 160 countries around the globe.

The podcast is 45 minutes long and covers my experience shooting features like Act of Valor (the first major motion picture shot on Canon 5D) and the upcoming DreamWorks film, Need For Speed starring Aaron Paul. Learn how we put you in the driver’s seat at 180mph so that the audience is immersed and can feel the speed and emotion; how we chose the Canon C500, Arri Alexa, Canon 1DC and GoPro and then mixed the footage; and the beta firmware on the GoPro that was developed for Need for Speed and is now in the Hero 3+.

You’ll also hear about my music video work with groups like the Smashing Pumpkins and Rolling Stones; commercials and organizing the spot for Prudential; how we started working with the Canon 5D on the Terminator webisodes and Act of Valor; the role of a DP; creating the emotion of your characters through lighting choices; why failure is good; and how we started the HurlBlog.

I hope my passion for teaching and inspiring others comes through. Thanks for listening.

[…] I am a HUGE Breaking Bad fan, so the fact that Aaron Paul is starring in this film is one reason I can’t wait to see NEED FOR SPEED.  But after listening to Shane Hurlbut and seeing all the ways this film was made, I am fascinated for it wasn’t done with the typical CGI film, where the cars and action are enhanced with Computer-generated imagery.  This film was made with the cars really in action and the cameras were CGI out.  To understand better check out Shane Hurlbut’s blog post here.
