If you are in the Los Angeles area, don’t miss this free educational event coming up on May 31st from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, on the Saturday after Memorial Weekend. “Versatility in Filmmaking” is our Spring Education and Demonstration Festival co-sponsored by Hurlbut Visuals and Revolution Cinema Rentals and will provide education via hands-on demonstrations featuring our HV sponsors and other vendors: Blackmagic Design, Canon, HP, SmallHD, The Music Bed, Tiffen, Kino Flo, Freefly Systems (MoVI), and Redrock Micro, among others.
It is also a great place to network with other filmmakers. I am hosting the event with speakers Jacob Rosenberg, director from Bandito Brothers, and independent filmmaker Julien Lasseur. Blackmagic will be showing off the URSA 4K. Jacob Rosenberg, director of “Waiting for Lightning,” was born and raised in the heart of Silicon Valley. He is a digital technology expert, author and filmmaker. For over a decade, Rosenberg has worked extensively as a senior consultant to Adobe Systems Inc., on Adobe’s digital video software applications.
Jacob developed his passion for video and film as a skateboarder in the early 1990’s, making two of the most acclaimed skateboard videos for the company Plan B. Upon graduating from Emerson College, his thesis film was released on DVD and he promptly began directing music videos, commercials and short films.
Rosenberg connected with Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh when he served as the Online Editor and Digital Intermediate Supervisor for “Dust to Glory.” “Dust to Glory” utilized an all digital workflow designed by him that used 1080p HD as its Digital Intermediate format, mixing nine different video formats seamlessly and printing the HD edit directly to film. Subsequent to “Dust to Glory,” Jacob has contributed his technical knowledge to a number of feature film projects, including “Superman Returns,” Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones documentary “Shine a Light,” James Cameron’s “Avatar,” and the upcoming independent film, “LBS.”
Mr. Rosenberg brings his extensive experience as filmmaker, author and digital media expert to Bandito Brothers, a full service media solution that creates, produces, manages and distributes audio visual content.
Julien Lasseur – I’ve honed my skills as a director/cinematographer under the stressful situations that are characteristic of a young independent filmmaker’s hustle in the business – extremely tight budgets, and extremely tight time constraints. Taking on multiple roles and learning different facets of filmmaking has inadvertently made me a producer. Similar to the ever-evolving music business, filmmaking can now be accomplished with fewer people and smaller budgets. Here are some ideas about how to stay on top and survive. Shane Hurlbut, ASC is a cinematographer with 18 feature films to his credit, including Need for Speed (March 2014), Act of Valor, Terminator Salvation, We Are Marshall, The Greatest Game Ever Played and Drumline. The American Society of Cinematographers nominated Hurlbut in 1998 for Best Cinematography in the category of Television Movie/Miniseries on his very first feature, The Rat Pack. Hurlbut is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Cinematography Branch and one of a selected group recognized by Canon as an Explorer of Light and by The Tiffen Company as an ImageMaker.
After graduating from Emerson College in 1986, he worked as a gaffer for mentors, Joseph Yacoe, Daniel Pearl, ASC, Kevin Kerslake, and Herb Ritts, who all shaped him to be a creative risk taker and shaped his artistic gift with lighting. Hurlbut’s shooting career began in 1995 with music videos for The Rolling Stones, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins followed quickly by commercial work. Since 1998, he has been consistently collaborating on features with directors Rob Cohen, John Stockwell, McG, Charles Stone III, Bill Paxton, Scott Waugh and Stefan Ruzowitzky among others. Hurlbut’s creative synergy with each director brings out an unparalleled passion and fearlessness to try new techniques on every project. Cinematography icons Roger Deakins, ASC, Harris Savides, ASC and Robert Richardson, ASC push Hurlbut as an artist with their subtlety and choice of lenses. Directors Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson give Hurlbut courage to continue walking down the path of new and unconventional. Their vision takes an audience, immerses them in a scene where they never thought they would experience it that way and leaves them filled with emotion. That is impressive movie-making and what inspires Shane as an artist.
