The wait is over! The date has finally come, THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF SHANE’s INNER CIRCLE, as I fly down to New Orleans to start my next project, which is going to be absolutely amazing. I cannot talk about it too much right now, TOP SECRET, but I will say that this TV series will be a gold mine of knowledge that I will be sharing with all Inner Circle members on a weekly basis. This is what I will be up to until July 31st.
The Power of being on the INSIDE
I know I talk about POWER a lot. It is one of my favorite words. HA HA!!! But this site is truly unique and the current Inner Circle members are the proof in the pudding so to speak. Why would you pay $17.95 a month to get to the inside? Well, I will let the members in this community tell you in their own words. My amazing team has designed an incredible new website that will tell you how powerful this educational tool can be. You can browse the content from its inception, but nothing is as strong as members telling you what this site means to them, how it has changed their lives, how it has inspired them to dream, to up their game, to change the way they light, lens, compose and WHY they should do things instead of just being told HOW to do them.
2 Ways to Become a Member
Here are some comments from Inner Circle members about WHY what we do is so special
This is an email from Ben Richardson who actually grew up in the same area that I did in Upstate New York, a farming community. His story is amazing and one that needs to be shared. It is about dreaming and knowing that it is possible. It really moved me and my team at Hurlbut Visuals, and I wanted to share just a portion of it. It is why we do what we do. It makes us all smile and know that all our long hours, hard work, passion and endless determination to deliver content that no one else can does not go unnoticed. THANK YOU Ben and all of the Inner Circle members for inspiring us and KEEPING IT REAL!!!!!
So I’m sitting there, staring at the screen, and I realize it’s possible. It’s possible. This is big to me, really big, because my father didn’t shoot Blade Runner, and my uncle isn’t Francis Ford Coppola. I didn’t go to film school, I’d never even been to LA. I’m just some farm boy from nowhere, New York… but so is he. So is Shane Hurlbut, ASC. I’m stunned, and I’m thinking “I’ve driven through Aurora, hell I go to Moravia for Thanksgiving, and he grew up right down a road I have driven countless times”. I couldn’t believe my eyes and yet there it was, proof. Proof it can be done, proof dreams can become reality, proof that you don’t have to be an insider, you don’t need to be born into it, you can earn it. If it were for nothing else, not the blogs, or the power posts, or the master classes, if for just that – that you can earn it, you changed my life.
Inspiring and most of all one of the best resources out there. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing your secrets allowing the next gen of filmmakers to perfect the craft of filmmaking.
Lydia and Shane – You guys are awesome. Everything you’re doing for us is just flat out LIFE CHANGING. Yesterday I was a freaking mad man on set. Bouncing my Keys, using a light meter to measure my key/fill/backlight ratio, setting up LINEAR c-stands. Those are just a few I used but I can’t tell you two enough that the mentoring you’ve been giving all of us is inspiring me into a world of filmmaking that is magical. Just the fact that you commented on my Batten light made my freaking day. I can’t wait to do anything else you guys will ever need, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay you two for your commitment to education. My only goal is to listen, learn, and then just like you, inspire the people around me to want to do better. Seriously, thank you! I place a great value on the knowledge you have shared and apparently so do others. I just wanted to thank you and let you know your knowledge and passion is making a difference in the industry. Maybe small now but I have big plans and even bigger dreams and the audacity to make it happen.
I think the information shared and the community Shane and Lydia have built is amazing. Plus it’s a very positive and constructive forum where things don’t get out of hand and we have creatives chopping each other down. Which to me is worth it for that alone. I spend a lot of time online reading and educating myself. There is nothing worse than trying to find information and threads turn into fan boy fights. I pay for information all the time and even if I only get a small piece of knowledge, it’s worth it to me. This place is oozing with knowledge and has helped me when faced with some challenges in production. It’s like a life line on Millionaire but you can call a friend more than once.
To Lydia I thank you for the sacrifices and support you have made for Shane’s work. I know you already know this but both of your work is important. I doubt you will ever know how important. I have a greater respect for Shane’s honest and humble love for you than his cinematography. My wife is the reason I have been able to do everything I have done. She and my kids have made sacrifices and believed in me when everyone, including my parents, thought we were nuts. They believed and when I wanted to quit, my wife forced me to stay the course. I have seen the love and sacrifice it takes and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing what you have done. It has changed my life, my circumstances, and given me the greatest job on earth. You deserve just as much credit if not more than Shane. I know he agrees because he has told me so. So thank you both so much for what you have done. I can’t tell you how excited I am for the future. I know I have a long road ahead of me but honesty it’s the challenge I love, not the destination.
I can’t believe how much I’ve learned even in just a few months. We should start our own guild!
I think that one of the coolest things about the IC was covered in the last podcast. I love that we’re covering small/DIY lighting, but that will get us to where we always improve and enlarge our lighting. So here’s a huge hat tip to Hurlbut Visuals, Lydia Hurlbut, and all of you in the inner circle for helping us go from Home Depot shop lights to 18Ks! YOU ROCK!
There are also the monthly podcasts where you can ask Shane anything. For example I asked him how he lit scenes from Need for Speed. He spent about 5 minutes breaking down the lighting scene. Guess what? Used that setup on a commercial and worked amazing.
I just subscribed to the inner circle earlier this week. Wow it’s just amazing! I’ve learned so much about lighting in just two posts I read.
WOW! WOW! WOW! I’m so proud and grateful that I’ve been a part of this amazing group from the beginning! Shane, Lydia and the entire Inner Circle is as good as it gets and is only getting better! This and the IE Tour & Masterclass is what filmmaking education is at its best! Of all that Shane brings to us, he’s also a constant source of inspiration, passion and enthusiasm! I can only imagine what surprises await!! Looking forward to it all! Thank you!
Hello, Inner Circle, I wanted to introduce my self. I’m a Cinematographer in Los Angeles. I started learning back when I was 11 years old, (years ago) and I just want to thank Shane Hurlbut for pretty much being the only Professional Cinematographer pushing to make all of us better. so thank you.
Honestly I can’t imagine life without the inner circle now, never have I come close to a resource with this kind of power.
I don’t know about you guys but after watching Illumination Experience Workshops I feel like Sherlock now. When watching films now, I can observe and break down everything in a scene e.g lights, shot composition, movement and so much more. hanks to Hurlbut Visuals.

Thanks so much Hurlbut team of awesomeness!! You guys are all so amazing and inspirational. I feel privileged to have Angie as a professor and to have met Shane, and his awesome ie crew! I printed an email of encouragement from David Weldon and put it up on my work cubicle wall to keep me motivated. All these these things have made a big impact on me. Us inner circle members are so lucky, thank you guys for everything
I appreciate all the great things I am learning from the inner circle. Thanks to Shane, team, and everyone who is sharing their journey
It’s an absolute honor and privilege to be a part of the inner circle. Thank you so much Hurlbut Visuals and Lydia Hurlbut for bringing this amazing network to life!
Shane I’ve found your blog a few days ago, and it’s by far the best source for cinematography resources around. Thanks for sharing all this knowledge with us, the beginners, the independents, the starters. I’m really amazed by the quality and detail of the tips you give on the blog, and I really appreciate your tips & tricks for low budget productions
I’m am constantly blown away with Shane’s generosity of time and knowledge. I don’t see anyone else in the industry doing anything anywhere near what he does for us. I’ll never be able to repay him. And then there’s all of us here in the Inner Circle that are super generous too. Overwhelmed with gratitude…
What’s Inside the Inner Circle other than an amazing group of talented filmmakers from all over the WORLD?

Get inside my “lighting playbook” in which I detail how to use lighting essentials for creating and sustaining a compelling story. Two things define cinematography, where you place the light and how you create shadow. The first stroke of lighting is the key light, the light that exposes the face. This is where you always begin because where you place the key light dictates where you place your camera. Learning the art of creative lighting is an essential core of Shane’s Inner Circle.
On Set With Shane
Go on set with me as a virtual member of my team. See what I see when walking onto a location for the first time and how I interact with the director about the setting and the script. See the location pictures, what I’m looking for, the light quality in the room, the things I’ll need to alter in transforming ordinary into extraordinary. Understand where and why I place my lights; view the actual lighting schematics. I’ll describe curve balls that are thrown at me by the director, Mother Nature and the ever changing production schedule. I’ll show you how we worked around these obstacles and succeeded in the end.
It is important to balance film theory fundamentals with more practical application solutions that are easily implemented on set. See comprehensive cinematic solutions that combine film theory and the power of innovative lighting techniques. Cinematic Solutions include extensive narrative to explain my creative purpose and thought process, the bold choices I regularly make and the risks I willingly take in capturing the director’s cinematic vision.
My expert team of camera operators and I constantly test new products, experiment with innovative techniques and push both to their capability limits. Get to know the subtleties of choosing the right lenses, the proper camera motions and the ideal lighting configuration necessary to optimize the visual flow of the story. Gain insight into how I choose the best camera for capturing the scene I have envisioned. Learn the importance of choosing the best tool for the job with no gratuitous allegiance to a single camera type or lens.
During a monthly podcast, I answer questions submitted by members regarding unique issues and challenges they encounter. In addition to questions regarding equipment and technology, subscribers ask me how I interpret and capture character emotions that help capture the theme of the story. Career advice questions are answered and I provide insight on how to access sources of information that may be difficult or impossible to access. I frequently interpret questions beyond what was asked to provide additional insight in addressing the designated subject.
Inner Circle subscribers have access to an exclusive Facebook community. This social media connection is a valuable networking source for members seeking peer-to-peer engagement and guidance on their daily challenges. This community interacts like a trusted collegial society of professionals that weigh in on each other’s requirements and requests. Secret sauce that members have created is passed around. Shane delivers an intimate and honest assessment and participates from wherever his schedule takes him.
Camera Profiles and LUTs
Get access to picture styles that lensed Act of Valor, The Last 3 Minutes, The Ticket and over 150 commercials. Transform your DSLR into a movie-making machine. Increase your efficiency and productivity on set by downloading these camera profiles for your Canon C500, C300, C100, C100 MK II and 1DC that my team and I roll out with on a daily basis.
The Content that is KING
For all of you who want to get a taste of what is inside the walls, I am sharing a teaser trailer to our official launch post. It was shot at my home. It’s personal; it’s intimate; it’s a new content style that I feel will be so rewarding in an inspiring as well as an educational way. You really see how I paint with light, one light at a time. Enjoy and Start your Journey. Meet you all on the inside.
