Hello Shane and company… Bryan Tosh here with a question regarding the business. Like most of us Inner Circle members, I am an aspiring DP, I’ve worked on many short student films as a Grip, Gaffer, and DP, but have hopes to get into bigger things, naturally. I’ve been a PA on Portlandia and recently on The Librarians. Do you feel being a PA is a viable way toward working as a DP down the road? Is there hope for the future being a Production Assistant? Dear Captain of the Death Ship, The Dallas Masterclass was un-friggn’-believable! Cinematographers would be stupid not to attend The Illumination Experience. Film school didn’t get even close to touching the wealth of knowledge I learned there. Thank you! My passion is movies and episodic TV in narrative form. I’ve DP’d a good amount of shorts already and my current workload consists of a lot of corporate and commercial work that just doesn’t fulfill my creative needs at this point in my career. What are your thoughts on how to get episodic or feature length work to guide my career toward more narrative work? Would you suggest finding an agent? Hi Shane, I would like to ask about using diffusion filters. Do you use these filters all your shots or only some shots when you shoot ‘Need For Speed’ and ‘Act Of Valor’? Thanks in advance.
Hi Shane! Loving the Podcasts! I’ve listened to every one of them from start to finish… Like a sponge! 🙂 Anyway, the question I have is regarding 80A filters on the lens… Have you ever shot a night for day scene? (Not day for night!) Since HMI lights are to some a very expensive option, do you think it is a viable option to shoot a “day scene” at night using only tungsten lights with a 80A filter on the lens? Will this work or will it look faked? Should I rather use the sport fixtures from Grainger lights? Speaking of the Grainger lights, the ones I found on their website has 4000K color temp bulbs in them… now you mentioned that after 100 hrs or so they burn away the green… Will the color temp rise as well after 100 hours or do i need to look for 6000K bulbs? Hi Shane, I have a couple questions regarding LED lighting. First, what is your opinion of LED light? Second, can you share any tips for working it? I have a few LED panel lights that I often use for corporate work and I just love the convenience of them: no heat, battery powered, mobile and dimmable. On the flip side, when I use them something just feels off. I can’t quite put my finger on it but if I had to put it in a word, I’d say “artificial.” Thanks! Darren
Hey shane, i’ve seen all of your videos! and i’m big big big fan of your work. i have question for you and would love an answer on it-
1:How bad is barrel distortion in lenses, is it preferred a little, or do you always want rectilinear lines?
2:How important is lens sharpness ?
3:What i don’t get is slimming of the face. How exactly is that achieved and also the 3D look. i have seen your comparison video with the Cooke and Leica lenses and to be 100% honest with you, i did not get the 3D look thing.
